Cyprus Green Party

History in Brief
Cyprus Green Party was founded back in 1996, after the decision of various environmental and ecological organizations in Cyprus that the time was matured for entering the Cyprus Parliament and keep their struggle from a higher level.
Despite the fact that during the Parliamentary elections of May 1996, the party had only a couple of months life and the fact that only 17 candidates run for the 56 seats, the result of 1% was considerably good, having in mind the conditions and way of thinking of the local people.
After those elections, the party started its activities, covering every aspect of Cyprus life, solving great environmental problems, helping people in their local struggles against threats of their health and prosperity. Some examples of the very successful activities of the Cyprus Green Party are:
  • The successful struggle against the army training of the British Troops in Akamas peninsula. After long protests of the party in coordination with a great number of ordinary people, British troops decided to end their army training which was destroying the National Park of Akamas for many years.
  • After a long time of protests, we managed to end the operation of Rainbow factory (dying clothes), which with the use of chemicals and other dangerous products was creating health problems to the people living in the area of Akaki. A great number of cancer incidents has also reported during the period of the operation of this factory. Finally, Cyprus Green Party managed to close it and remove it from the area.
  • Four years of protests and struggle were needed for Cyprus Green Party and the people living in the village of Ergates, near Nicosia, to succeed the closure of the steel foundry which was operating very close to the build-up area. A great number of people, especially children were reported to have enormous amount of lead in their blood, a result of the exhalations of the factory, as it has been formally reported after the closure of the factory.
  • The decision of the Turkish government to build a nuclear factory at Accuyu, an area exactly opposite Cyprus and only 40 km away from Kyrenia, was something which the Cyprus Green Party in co-ordination with the Green Parties in Europe fight with all possible ways. The fact that the area of Accuyu is within an area of often earthquakes, was putting the whole area of Eastern Mediterranean in great danger. The activities of Cyprus Green Party and the European Green Parties prevent a nuclear destruction by forbidding Turkey to build such a factory in this area.
  • Cyprus Green Party struggling once again by itself and being the pioneer in the protection of people from any danger of its health, protested and still protesting against the installation of a giant antenna in Akrotiri village, an area which gathers within the British base.
These are only a few examples of the activities of Cyprus Green Party during the period of the last 5 years (1996 - 2001). With all these successful moves, our party decided to participate in the parliamentary election, last May. We managed to double our power, getting almost 2% of the votes and electing one member in the new parliament. George Perdikis was elected, being a candidate in Nicosia's list.
