![]() Armenians in CyprusCyprus is a small island in the Mediterranean, it's about 9251 km2 (3572m2), with about 750,000 population. It's capital is Nicosia, the other main towns are Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. Since 1974, after the Turkish invasion, Cyprus is divided in two. For centuries Armenians used to live in Cyprus, but the main exodus of Armenians from their homelands to Cyprus was during the 1915-20 years. Currently about 2000 Armenians live in Cyprus mainly in Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol. During the 1974 Turkish invasion the Armenian community, as everybody else, lost its "Makara" and "Kantsvor" monasteries, its primary school, church and prelature in Nicosia, as well as, other properties belonging to the community. In order to reserve their identity, Armenians throughout their history used to live near their churches and schools, which were build near to each other. Currently there are three Armenian churches and schools in Cyprus, one in each town. Of course we cannot forget the only secondary school, the Melkonian Educational Institute, known as the "Small Armenia". Armenians could not survive without their language, that's why, although they never exited 7000 in Cyprus, they used to have their own newspapers, like "Ayk", "Araks" etc. Currently the following newspapers are published.
