ECOGNOSIA was formed in Nicosia, Cyprus, in February 1994, by a group of scientists to act as a non profit organisation to both, fill an important gap in the field of environmental studies and to enhance the relationship people-environment.

OBJECTIVES
1. To facilitate the preparation of environmental policies by providing environmental information to policy makers, civil servants, scientists and technical personnel.
2. To enable the dissemination of information for solutions to pollution and other environmental problems in Cyprus and the Mediterranean basin.
3. To avail information and data to the public, on environmental sciences and technology.
4. To promote environmental awareness on the dangers from the use of chemicals and other pollutants.
5. To aid and contribute to the environmental education and to raise awareness of the Cypriot population on issues pertaining to the environment.
6. To research into environmental issues with the cooperation of local and international research Institutes.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVES
The above objectives are achieved through a combination of strategies, namely:
a) offer of a centre of information and documentation
b) support to scholars for research and policy making
c) organisation of conferences, symposia, workshops, seminars, training programs, tours, lectures and field excursions for the public, decision makers, NGOs, volunteer agencies and the media.
d) contribution to magazines and books and production posters, videos and slides on environmental topics.

FACILITIES
- Ecognosia has a library with over 5 000 volumes on environmental topics.
- It uses instructional material and facilities at INTERCOLLEGE, a well known and reputable college.
- Use of the skills, technical and scientific expertise of its founders and associates.
- Use of the latest computer services and connection to the INTERNET.
